چکیده

A 44-year-old human immunodeficiency virus-infected (HIV+) female with severe Category 3 (C3) diagnosed in 2010 was admitted to hospital acute diarrhoea. She non-adherent antiretroviral therapy (ART) and had a previous suspicion of respiratory symptoms cough that been persisting for 15 days. Clinical examination revealed immune deterioration (viral load: 109,655 copies/mL; CD4+ count: 14 cells/mm3), (negative sputum Gram stain tuberculosis culture), neurological (serological assays negative Cryptococcus spp. Toxoplasma gondii). coproculture Campylobacter spp., Salmonella Shigella Ziehl–Neelsen staining faecal smears the presence Cryptosporidium oocysts. PCR testing sequencing confirmed concomitant infection C. meleagridis Enterocytozoon bieneusi. The patient treated metronidazole (500 mg every 8 h 5 days) nitazoxanide 12 days). After requesting voluntary discharge abandoning ART parasiticidal treatments, she experienced dramatic her state health contact lost. Our results have demonstrated molecular-based improves detection opportunistic pathogens are difficult detect by routine microscopy, allows transmission dynamics investigations, assists choosing best chemotherapeutical option.

A review was conducted to examine published works that focus on the complex epidemiology of Enterocytozoon bieneusi infection in humans. Studies on the prevalence of these emerging microsporidian pathogens in humans, in developed and developing countries, the different clinical spectra of E. bieneusi intestinal infection in children, in different settings, and the risk factors associated with E...

Cryptosporidium meleagridis infection: the first report in Poland of its occurrence in an HIV-positive woman

Cryptosporidium is an opportunistic protozoan parasite that can cause severe diarrhoea in immunocompromised patients. The transmission of this pathogen in humans and animals is not fully understood. C. meleagridis, originally described in birds, is the only Cryptosporidium species known to naturally infect mammalian and avian species. This study documents the first detection of C. meleagridis i...

The first case of Enterocytozoon bieneusi infection in Poland.

Microsporidia are intracellular parasites that cause opportunistic infections in humans of various immunological status. Only a few case reports exist on microsporidial infection in solid organ transplant recipients worldwide. The presented study demonstrates the first case in Poland of Enterocytozoon bieneusi infection in a liver transplant patient. Parasites were diagnosed in stool samples us...

Cryptosporidium parvum and Enterocytozoon bieneusi in American Mustangs and Chincoteague ponies.

The prevalence of Cryptosporidium and microsporidia in feral horses, which have minimal contact with livestock and humans, is not currently known. We report the findings of a study on Cryptosporidium and microsporidia in 34 Mustangs and 50 Chincoteague ponies in the USA. Fecal samples were screened for presence of Cryptosporidium spp. by analysis of the small-subunit rRNA (SSU) and 60-kDa glyco...
